Volvo Servicing - Done!
The last installment from General Manager, Alistair Hackett, in Auckland with the Volvo Ocean Race Fleet
Ocean Safety’s involvement with the Volvo Ocean Race in Auckland is now complete – All the yachts are now back in the water and have been sailing for the last 5 days including taking part in the “New Zealand Herald In Port Race” last weekend. The team we had in Auckland are now on their way back to the UK having successfully serviced and checked all the major pieces of safety equipment on each yacht, the work carried out included: -
- Service all the Jonbuoy Recovery Modules
- Inspect and check all the Ocean Compact Ultralite liferafts
- Service all the Single & Double Inflatable Horseshoes
- Work with all the Volvo Boatyard and all the teams to ensure all the remaining safety equipment is in perfect condition to tackle the Southern Ocean & Cape Horn.
Steve Bockett commented “It’s been an intensive 10 days which has been made easier with the help from everyone in The Boatyard as well as from the teams’ support crew. I must thank everyone at Hutchwilco who are our local service agents in Auckland, Greg, Brian, Bernie, Rogan and all their team made us very welcome but most importantly provided the facility for us to carry out all the work we needed to do. It has been great to work with such a professional company and also allows us to leave Auckland knowing that we have great representation down here and know that they will be able to service Ocean Safety equipment going forwards”.
Our involvement with the race doesn’t stop now, we will be available to provide support to the organisers and the teams through all the remaining legs and we will see all the teams during the Cardiff stopover.
General Manager Alistair Hackett is responsible for the race at Ocean Safety – “The Volvo Ocean Race is the first time anyone has used the Ocean Compact Ultralite liferafts and also the first time the rafts have come from our ‘Hire Fleet’ via Ocean Safety Rental, the Boatyard are happy with way the hire process is working. In Auckland we carried out a visual inspection of the raft however when the fleet are in Cardiff we will take the opportunity to get all the rafts back to Southampton to give them a full service so giving the yachts another 12 months usage after the race. We already know the raft has proved itself in a real emergency and whilst we never want it to happen we all know it does and therefore we have a tried and tested product.”
We will continue to monitor event as the teams battle their way to Cape Horn and beyond and wish them all the very best and safe sailing.
